In this latest installment of the Explore Kids franchise, it’s painfully determined that the decline shown in Sight Kids 2 is animated along faster than a mom unplugging your Xbox game. Where the unique was fun, goofy and life affirming, Ogle Kids 3-D is over-blown and lacking in any feeling and consistency.

Oh, the actors are having a blast, but it unbiased doesn’t translate to the audience. The only grand moment was Elijah Wood’s cameo as “The Guy”. The most painful section was watching Stallone on camouflage at the same time as four different characters. Not even Ricardo Montalban acting in his best earnest grandparent mode could bring the movie to any heights.

And the 3-D? They musty the traditional technology of red in one peruse and blue in the other which causes the film’s colors to be muted and the film to darken inappropriately. Oh, I’m definite that kids will earn a blast putting on and taking off their glasses when the film tells them, but when you have polarization technology to finish the same carry out without the headache, why utilize such an antiquated format? Game over is lawful.

I kept watching this hoping a state would eventually advance up. But it didnt .

“Somewhere out there, beneath the pale moonlight,” there must be a better non-Disney-animated film. NAAAAAAAAH! An American Tail is animator and director Don Bluth’s best work to date. The record of a young Russian mouse being swept out to sea while on a voyage with his family to America unruffled holds up very well, even (GASP!) 15 years after the film’s theatrical debut. (Wow, I’m getting worn!) Fortunately the young mouse, whose name is Fievel, washes up alive and well on Recent York Harbor. From there, he sets off on a creep to accept his family. But it may be more difficult than he anticipated once he comes across the “two-faced” villain Warren T. Rat (voiced to perfection by John Finnegan) and the city’s many other dangers that could threaten his quest.

As stated before, An American Tail is very nicely fascinating, and the extraordinary soundtrack, collected by James Horner, gives the movie a timeless quality that is one of the reasons why it stands the test of time. Each character is also perfectly voiced. Impartial to name a few of these talents, Philip Glasser is the allege of Fievel, Dom DeLuise is Tiger the cat, Amy Green is Fievel’s sister, Tanya, and as mentioned before, John Finnegan is Warren T. Rat. The songs are also brilliantly performed, the best of which is the classic “Somewhere Out There,” beautifully sung during the film by Fievel and Tanya, and again during the slay credits by Linda Ronstadt.

All in all, An American Tail is an enduring and heartwarming film that will be embraced by everyone who’s young at heart. And so it is to these people that I highly recommend this film. And if you bask in it, I also recommend viewing the sequel, An American Tail: Fievel Goes West. It’s every bit as marvelous.

Since I have already written a review aid in spring of 2001 that touches on the brilliance of this interesting like, this review will focus primarily on the newly released DVD of the film.

I for one, was certainly thrilled to learn that Universal was finally giving Fievel the coveted DVD treatment, and anticipated its release on the format each day since. Yes, features are scarce, and yes, the film is presented in fat frame only, but the method I study it, having An American Tail on DVD at all is a milestone for me, since it is a title I have yearned for since the early days of the format. Do not net me unfriendly, I am a VERY strong supporter of modern aspect ratio on home video, but An American Tail is not exactly a film that cries out for the anamorphic widescreen treatment. In this case, its omission does not really detract from the experience. But then again, maybe I am being slightly biased about this film, having seen it once as child, loved it, and becoming twisted on it ever since.

As far as the relate quality is concerned, aside from the image being fat frame, I was actually rather impressed. I was not expecting the image to be quite so crisp and positive. There were a few more speckles of film dirt then I view should have been there, but for a film nearing twenty years obsolete, it was calm a fine deal better than I was expecting. Clarity was most definitely improved over the VHS versions, and colors were strong and nice-looking.

The sound is also graceful large. I listened to the DTS 5.1 soundtrack on my surround system, and it is, without a doubt, the best I have ever heard this film. However, those of you who have seen American Tail numerous times over (as I have) are plug to peer changes in some of the dialogue as compared to past video releases. In teh opening titles, for example, as we reach the Mousewitz home, laughter is now heard inside the humans’ cottage where, on the VHS release, all that can be heard is James Horner’s soundtrack. Also, fresh or never-before-heard of dialogue have been spliced into the film throughtout. Th emost noteable instances of this are during the scenes when Fievel is trapped in a birdcage, crying, fair before he meets Tiger. Also, when the cats are being anchored up onto the ship headed for Hong Kong, Warren T. now utters an additional line from offscreen, which I will leave you to peek. Anyone who has seen the film a grand many times is whisk to perceive these changes.

While this altered/re-dubbed dialogue does not neccesarily afflict the film, it is unruffled attractive to demand why these changes were needed. Perhaps Universal felt the need to offer something unique to DVD buyers who would be purchasing this film again? There is no sense in correcting something that was never broken to originate with. Be that as it may, the changes do not pick away from one’s enjoyment of the film, or certainly not mine, at least.

Bottom line, American Tail lovers who are not particularly picky about aspect ratio should net this DVD well worth acquring . Like I said, I am titanic on widescreen myself, but in this case, found the movie too irresistable to turn down, especially at its outrageous list brand. Elephantine frame and re-recorded dialogue aside, An American Tail is tranquil the classic that it was nearly 20 years ago. So steal it before you are stuck trying to get an out-of-print copy “somwhere out there.”

The animation is a shrimp off in the first episode or two (feels a miniature bit more cheap and hurried than some other Lupin), but the dubbing is really hilarious. I savor this series for a lot of reasons, but the tongue-in-cheek dubbing is definitely one of the expansive ones, and it’s really on the tag on this DVD. If you like the funny Lupin dubbing too, this DVD is definitely a kindly take.

I appreciate this spot of DVDs. There are about a dozen episodes that seem to have been realized on numerous collections, I myself have damage up with about three copies of each of these, but this plot is all current and previously unavailable.

My only wish is that it was longer. Eight hours seems to pass in seconds when watching this collection.

It’s Factual Red Skelton is “The King Of Laughter.” He is one of the most funniest man on this earth. His character’s are so histaricall. I Appreciate Freddie The Freeloader, Cauliflower McPugg & Deadeye. This is a satisfactory space.

I have seen thousands of films in my life, and plan nothing could surprise me anymore on a conceal. Amelie proved me I was spoiled. Instead of writing another “best film ever” comment, I would like to give some indications for non-french speaking viewers, as the translation might have made some lines a bit obscure.

Amelie says to Colignon “Meme les artichauds ont du coeur” (Even artichokes have a heart) . In french, “un coeur d’artichaud” (an artichoke heart) is a person that falls very often and easily in treasure.

Colignon calls Amelie “Amelie-melo” (bid “ah-may-LEE-may-low”) which sounds like “un meli-melo”, a muddle or mix-up.

In the cafe, people discuss about time and weather, as the same word “temps” means both “le temps qui traditional” (time that passes) and “le temps qu’il fait” (the weather) . So goes Hippolito’s theory : they boom about the weather because they are timid of the passing time.

Collignon says about his mother : “Elle a une memoire d’elephant, un elephant de mer” (literally: she has memory like an elephant, a sea elephant) . A “sea elephant” is a sort of walrus, and “mer” (sea) and “mere” (mother) are pronounced the same.

When Amelie is in a theater, she watches “Jules & Jim”, a movie by Francois Truffaut. There are many references to Truffaut in the movie : Claire Maurier plays the mother in “the 400 blows” and many scenes refer to “Bed and Board”, which itself refers to Hitchcock’s “Rear window”. I mild have to figure which was the movie whith Spencer Tracy driving without watching…

When Amelie watches her projected life on TV, a scene that refers to Woody Allen’s “Zelig”, the impart over is from Frederic Mitterand, nephew of his uncle, who is illustrious for commenting weddings or funerals of aristocrats on french TV.

Finally, “Amelie” comes from “Emily”, as Emily Watson was supposed to play the role, and “Poulain” is both a young untrained horse and a chocolate note. And this is not a coincidence.

Like the star of Chocolat, the title character of this magical comedy also wants to heal people inside. But this particular healer is a daydreamer with an irresistible smile, a Louise Brooks bob hairstyle or an Audrey Hepburn-like bun when it’s tied up, and will charm the pants off the iciest of souls.

The only-child of a tight-lipped, hard-hearted doctor father and a neurotic schoolteacher mother, Amelie Poulaine grew up being too mighty unloved, with a not too delighted childhood. As a young lady, she becomes a waitress at the Two Windmills cafe, but other times spends her time in an imaginative world of dreams, not forming cessation ties with people, being terribly troubled.

One day, she is watching TV when Princess Diana’s death is announced. From then on, she decides to be a healer of sorts, whether it be uniting a man with childhood memories he left in a cubbyhole in the skirting board long time ago, trying to soothe the hearts of people, acquire people’s lives better, or being an avenging angel. The scene where she helps a blind man across the street and describes what’s going on is simply magical.

Amelie is also befriended by artist Raymond Dufayel, known as the Glass Man because of a disease that has given him very brittle bones. They communicate indirectly through a painting he’s working on, particularly a young girl that Dufayel’s trying to figure out.

Amelie meets Nino Quincompoix, a man who collects discarded, frequently torn ID card photos from a photo booth and puts the reconstructed pieces in an album. Included in there many times is a stern bald man whose pictures are always torn up. Amelie finds Nino’s album and wonders who the bald man is. This is a mystery included in the film.

There’s Colignon the grocer, an evil middle-aged man who delights himself in disparaging his assistant Lucien, who’s slow-witted but nice and sensitive. Amelie feels sorry for Lucien and the scenes where she becomes his avenging angel at Colignon’s expense are hilarious. At one point she tells Colignon, “You’ll never be a vegetable. Even artichokes have hearts.” Ouch, but well deserved.

Amelie’s widowed father spends his life collecting garden statues to decorate his tiring, wife’s shrine, instead of travelling around the world. Amelie steals one of them, a bearded garden gnome complete with red pointed hat, and then something unusual happens. A few days later, her father receives a postcard from the gnome, who is apparently on holiday abroad!!! This goes on for a while and completely baffles him.

Audrey Tautou would’ve been my choice for Best Actress of the year. I simply melted everytime she smiled in the movie. She also bears a little similarity to another Audrey–Hepburn. Both have in approved unlit hair, a face brimming with charm, and irresistible smiles. Maybe that’s why it was care for at first peer with me.

Director Jean-Pierre Jeunet uses some quirky film techniques, mostly visual imagery, such as a scene when Amelie literally dissolves into water. The onscreen narration is also useful. At times, it sets the stage for turning points in the film. Earlier, it describes the likes and hates of the Poulaines and the one primary characteristic of the Two Windmill employees. He creates an imaginative film that’s a breather from the usual Hollywood grind. But it’s his closeups of Amelie and her smile that fabricate this worth seeing over and over.

The movie may sound rather arcane, but its vibrantly female point of view renders it anything but dry. It actually makes mathematics seem marvelously sexy. The supporting cast adds to the film’s distinctiveness: Timothy Leary (yes, the Timothy Leary, the LSD guru), is Sims, Emmy’s spectral cybervision of a mentor, and the inimitable Karen Black appears as the mother of both Emmy and Ada. –Laura Mirsky

This is a really fun, fun movie. It’s not the beat all of science fiction as it was hyped when it was released, but it certainly is a agreeable combination high adventure, site comedy, cyberpunk, and Bruce Willis gun fighting action. Doesn’t perform sense? Don’t disaster. I’ll elaborate.

High adventure comes from the plot: build the earth from noxious by finding some mystic items and a perfect human before the appointed zero hour. That noteworthy is distinct. Cyberpunk explains in a device the setting of the futuristic urban scenes, which are fantastically portrayed in this movie. All of the settings and technology were impressive as well as stylish. The special effects were well above average and in many scenes very impressive, but a station comedy? You got it. I won’t rep into the details. I will say there are quite a few scenes that involve the kind of subplots you gain in sitcoms. This is a sterling thing by the map. A lesser movie would mess this up. Director Luc Besson made all of these elements (no pun intended) fit seamlessly.

Acting is broad. Despite approved conception of models not being very estimable actors the models that acted in this film did a advantageous job of being campy in an captivating plot without hamming it up. I can go on an on about each of the reas actors and how they succeeded in pulling off whatever character, but I will digress to two ends of the spectrum. Chris Tucker as Ruby Rhod is priceless and worth the effect of admission alone. One exception I would have to say is Tommy “Slight” Lister as the President. Up until the final scenes his acting was lovely dry. I also have to criticize whoever decided to hype up the fact the movie has Luke Perry in it, who played Billy. Billy did nothing to carry the status and only had a cameo role in the beginning. Ugh… Hollywood.

The movie can collect too trendy. The music, though nice, didn’t really fit the setting. The very last scene is totally lame and if you ask me unlikely (sorry Korby…) . And there is a scene or two that was honest trying too hard to be hip. I can forgive all that because the comedy, action and drama do fit in to what ends up being a mirthful romp in high flying action.

Sony dropped the ball on their first blu-ray release of The Fifth Element. The uncompressed PCM and Dolby 5.1 surround tracks blew you away, but the video quality was merely on par with regular DVD resolution. This time Sony listened to their fans and remastered the movie so that you gain the chubby 1080p adore you deserved the last time. Bought the first blu-ray? No predicament. Sony seems to be offering an exchange program. Unbiased contact Sony and they will area up a design you can pass your venerable blu-ray for the remastered one. Contact info is below:

One downside though: no extras. That’s factual. All the chilly stuff in the ultimate edition is gone. Getting this DVD is fair like getting the first one they released. You pick up only the movie and some trivia text. If I were you I would unexcited wait until they manufacture some kind of special edition in blu-ray so you fetch the higher resolution AND the goodies.

If you want to experience a varied range of obedient emotions without taking any one of them too seriously then you’re going to worship The Fifth Element. If you want high definition and special features then you better wait. I am betting this is going to be the case with most (if not all) unique HD-DVD and Blu-Ray DVDs that first approach out.

The memoir goes that director Luc Besson began writing THE FIFTH ELEMENT in his teens, incorporating all the Sci-Fi elements he loved into one over-the-top, gargantuan set opera…sort of an “E.E. ‘Doc’ Smith ‘Skylark’ Meets Flash Gordon and Barbarella” hybrid with sex, intergalactic action, and even some pseudo-religious overtones tossed in…in other words, a teenage daydream approach apt! Critics panned the slay result for this very reason, sneering at Bruce Willis’ Earth-saving (yet again!) Korben Dallas, and Besson’s then-girlfriend, clothing-optional Milla Jovovich, as the innocent demigod, Leeloo.

The critics were depraved!

THE FIFTH ELEMENT is, in the best sense of the word, a classic ‘B’ movie, a status opera where a prologue vaguely similar to STARGATE leads to a future Earth where traffic jams occur thirty stories above the ground, humanity is ruled by plump ‘Tiny’ Lister Jr., and where the Ultimate Improper is served by everyone’s accepted villain, Gary Oldman, sporting a Southern accent! If this DOESN’T convince you that this is a ‘popcorn’ flick, not to be taken too seriously, there is Chris Tucker, sporting a blond hairdo, as the Galaxy’s celebrated media personality, promoting himself as he hits on his adoring female fans; Ian Holm, as the monk who knows ‘the Secret’, forced, despite himself, to become an active participant in the adventure; and some of the most … horrible alien mercenaries you’ll ever notice, terrorizing a area resort, until they meet their match in Bruce Willis’ ‘DIE HARD in Space’ protagonist! Yippee-Ki-Yay, indeed!

The FX are unbelievable, the comedy, gigantic and sly, the heroics, macho, and as Leeloo, sent to assign Earth, Jovovich manages to be both naive and sexy, with broken English and a gymnast’s grace.

Bruce Willis is a joy, as always, to gawk, and he carries the film with charm and self-depreciating humor, whether dealing with endless phone calls from his mother, driving his sky taxi recklessly (cabbies change very slight in the future!), taking on terrorists single-handed, or falling for the exotic Leeloo. When he blows away a roomful of hostage-holding aliens, then asks, “Does anyone else want to negotiate? “, you KNOW Besson picked the upright guy for the lead!

If you want Profound Science Fiction, spy 2001: A Station ODYSSEY again…but if you want to kick assist and unbiased have fun, recognize no further…THE FIFTH ELEMENT delivers!

These shorts are from the era when the Stooges were comprised of Larry, Moe, and Shemp. These are the probably the last of the expansive Stooges shorts. With television encroaching upon the motion relate industry, cost cutting measures were soon underway. One such measure taken at Columbia that had already impacted MGM and other studios was the decrease in scope of the short-subject department in 1952. Stooge short veterans producer Hugh McCollum and director Edward Bernds were casualties of this action, and this left only Jules White unhurried as a person in the short subject department with a feel for what made the Stooges special. Shooting schedules were shortened, faded Stooge shorts were slit up and recycled into sparse modern material, and fans were not fooled by all of this.

Do be aware that the first six volumes of the Three Stooges will be available in June on The Three Stooges Collection, Volumes 1-6 Bundle. This really is not a large assume, but is stunning noteworthy on par with what you pay for all six volumes when they are on sale. In my view, this collection will easily be the best of the Shemp volumes. These were the peak years for Shemp and most of the funniest shorts he made with Moe and Larry will be included. The quality will commence to dip in volume 7, with the departure of director Edward Bernds and screenwriter Elwood Ullman, but there are tranquil enough silly shorts to fabricate up for it like Corny Casanovas, Three Shadowy Horses, Gents In A Pickle, Goof on the Roof, etc. Decreasing budgets and increased utilize of stock footage will fabricate volume 8 a flawed situation, but some of the remakes like Bedlam In Paradise and Creeps actually improve upon the originals and the rare solo Shemp shorts will be immense to inspect. Volume 9 will be for diehards only, but home to several rarely shown shorts like A Merry Mix-Up, Horsing Around, and Flying Saucer Daffy. If a volume 10 is released, hopefully it will not include the insult Halt! Gaze! and Laugh!. Snow White and The 3 Stooges was a 20th Century Fox film, so it wouldn’t be included, though the exclusion of that technicolor mistake wouldn’t necessarily be a unpleasant thing.

“Mondovino” is filmmaker and sommelier Jonathan Nossiter’s examination of the politics and personalities of the wine industry that have influenced the taste of wines worldwide in the past 25 years. Some regard the rise of wine critics and consultants and the globalization of wineries as a boon to business, allowing more access to wine for more people and more profit for the industry. Others lament the “Rolland-Parker marriage and the Napa-ization of wine”, calling wine conglomerates like Mondavi “terroirists”, with their high-tech young wines and disregard for set. Nossiter is an opponent of the new trend toward homogenization in wines. But the film may be of interest to wine-lovers of all stripes, since it allows both sides to protest its viewpoint and to talk about wine, on 3 continents and in 5 languages -all of which Nossiter speaks. “Mondovino” is too long and repetitive at 2 hours and 15 minutes, but it has been edited down from a 10-part, 10-hour television series which may have aired in Europe. “Mondovino” was filmed by Jonathan Nossiter and Stephanie Pommez with a digital video camera that is usually handheld. The camera jiggles arrangement too grand for comfort, and the discontinuance zooms on people’s eyes are due the camera’s inability to enjoy focus. On the side of “terroir”, wine as an “expression of the personality of the status” or “somewhereness”, French vintners Aimé Guibert and Hubert de Montille wax poetic and derive philosophical about Man’s relationship with wine. Guibert was a major player in the “Mondavi Affair” in the town of Aniane, France, where townspeople, environmentalists, and anti-globalization groups came together to prevent Mondavi from constructing a mega-vineyard nearby. De Montille speaks candidly about his wines and family, and is one of “Mondovino”’s astronomical personalities. Prominent figures in the corporate world of wine include Tim and Michael Mondavi, Garen and Shari Staglin, Patrick Leon -technical director at Mouton-Rothschild, Leo McCloskey of Enologix, the largest wine consultant agency in the U.S., and members of the Frescobaldi and Antinori families in Italy, who were rivals to partner with Mondavi in the deal that resulted in Mondavi’s buyout of Ornellaia.

But the most racy and controversial proponents of “brands” and the global market are Michel Rolland, wine consultant for over 100 properties in 12 countries, and wine super-critic Robert Parker. Rolland is witty and arrogant to a fault, but he’s straightforward and rather comical if you don’t assume him seriously. He admits to imposing his have tastes on the world of wine. His solution to everything seems to be “unbiased micro-oxygenate”. Hundreds of wineries worldwide change their wines to suit him. And the man with the palate of gold smokes; his taste buds are fried. Robert Parker is less radiant, but more complicated. He speaks of the influence of the Watergate era on his thinking. He strove to dispel the conflict of interest in rating wines and monopoly of understanding by the Passe World vintners by introducing the honest critic, with the draw of making wine writing more pro-consumer. His detractors would argue that Parker’s way was to attend the California wine industry by rating wines highly that were oaky, as young wineries expend recent oak casks to shroud their lack of “terroir”. In any case, Parker seems to have replaced one tyranny of taste with another. Not coincidentally, Robert Parker and Michel Rolland, who are friends, have similar tastes in wine. When a wine is poorly rated by Parker, the vineyard hires Rolland to consult, and then the rating goes up -which looks an bad lot like a racket.

I’m not a wine drinker, so I’m not inclined to grasp sides in the culture vs commerce/ terroir vs brands battle. Some people will catch “Mondovino” revolutionary while others will come by it alarmist. Jonathan Nossiter makes astute and piquant observations in the film, but I reflect announcing the death of diversity in wines would be premature. It strikes me that the wine industry is a victim of its enjoy success. Improved technologies and increasing wealth have created a global market for wine. It would be impossible to maintain up with the inquire without young wines. And now consumers’ palates as well as critics’ have adapted to it. Industrialization brought the same fate to many industries. But that doesn’t necessarily mean the demise of small-scale, individualist products. There is normally a specialty market for them. “Mondovino” reminds me of the Scotch whisky industry in the 19th century. Single malts went out of fashion due to high cost, inconsistent quality, and shrimp scale production. The DVD (Assume Films 2005) : There are 2 bonus features: Portion VI of the 10-part “Mondovino” series, entitled “Quo Vademus? ” and an audio commentary with filmmaker Jonathan Nossiter. “Quo Vademus? ” is eclectic in theme, but focuses primarily on the belief of sprucing up young wines with unusual oak, a lawsuit against Robert Parker gripping some Burgundy wine, and taste being entirely personal. If you’re really into wine and enjoyed the film, you’ll probably like the audio commentary. Nossiter talks about the people in the film, their reactions, and his come to the subject. He does discuss themes of globalization, but avoids commenting on what the film means, preferring people to plan their acquire conclusions. Subtitles available for the film in English and French.

In this sprawling two-hour-plus documentary in which there is no narration, we peruse charming, sympathetic, sometimes cranky customary French and Italian men who talk about the origins of wine as being religious and spiritual with each status linked to a specific taste, flavor, and character of wine. The profiles of philistines, vulgarians, and other avaricious types are worthy in that the director impartial let’s them talk and sigh themselves. They are really like caricatures of villians in action films. To hear one wealthy family transplanted to Argentina talk about the indigenous people as being slothful for example is almost too worthy to enjoy.

The most touching portion of the film is the relationship between an ageing curmudgeon wine maker, fully of witty philosophical quips, and his daughter who shares his sensibility. She tells her father she is quitting the enormous winery she is working at because it has sold out. Her brother, who has business leanings, seems hell-bent on ruining his father’s legacy. This triangle between father and his daughter and son is what rises this film to the level of a truly expedient documentary.

One last bit of praise. The director, who interviews his subjects in the film, seems fluent in many languages: French, Italian, Spanish, and so on. Being able to state his subjects’ language gave him more access and this helped the film immensely.

I loved this movie….it is exceptionally well acted, witty, with a shining and biting script. Though it’s technically a “chick flick”, I contemplate men would devour it also (although maybe not admit that) . I saw it on television and liked it so noteworthy I wanted to behold the unedited version. You can never go disagreeable with a movie made by HBO, and is something that you will want to pull out of the drawer and search for again and again.

The director/screenwriter, Patricia Cardoso and the co-screenwriter George LaVoo of “Staunch Women have Curves,” have devised a movie centering around some very moving subjects: how we seek ourselves, how other’s observe us and the friction and or disparity between the two. At the center of this tale is a proud, hard-working Mexican American family: mother Carmen (Lupe Ontiveros) and her youngest daughter Ana (America Ferrera) . Ana is an honor student and valedictorian of her graduating high school class. Her dream is to pick up her scholarship at Columbia University and to rush the narrow confines and thinking of her East Los Angeles neighborhood and family. But mother, Carmen has other ideas: Carmen wants Ana to forgo college for awhile and to work in Ana’s sister’s garment factory so as to relieve relieve the family.

On top of this, Carmen is continually nagging at Ana to lose weight. “How do you query to collect a husband and have children with all that weight on you? ” Carmen asks Ana. It is to Cardoso’s credit that Ana has a very sure body image and of course it doesn’t harm that America Ferrera is quite exquisite and imbues Ana with a sort of fierce and dynamic determination that makes people stand up and rob stare not because of her size but because of her mind.

On the surface Carmen’s plans for Ana seem cruel and petite minded but in reality it is a natural trait of first generation immigrants to plot family about all else. Ontiveros plays Carmen not as an ogre but as a woman who fears for her daughter’s safety in the outside world. What Carmen doesn’t realize is that Ana has inherited her courage and presence of mind from her and her husband: Ana is a product, the physical manifestation of Carmen’s wishes and dreams of a better life for her children and herself.

The area allotment of “Genuine Women have Curves” is a scene in the garment factory when all the women, lead by Ana, choose to shed their clothing initially because of the heat. There is a palpable feeling of exaltation and release in this scene on several levels: “curvy” women not being embarrassed to disrobe and note their bodies that becomes a universal call to all women to embrace their physical selves and to reject what society and our culture dictates as the female ideal. In essence, all females are ideal is what Cardoso is saying.

“Valid Women have Curves” is a cramped film with the nerve and the guts to interrogate and then supply answers to some of the stuff our culture bombards us with daily. Stuff that can either stifle you…or create you stronger and more resolute.
